Tagum Missions Trip

Last December 29 & 30, 2007 we travelled to Tagum City, one hour drive north from where we lived.

Our mission was to ministered to pastors/chaplains in the area and be the guest speaker for the inauguration of a local church whose members are mostly natives in the coastal area. We had a great time of praise & worship together with the members. Grace and the boys ministered tru songs to the congregation.

I challenged the people to helped built the church in the area. Pastor Toto who we installed as their pastor is also one of the natives in that place.

Because the church is new, they are in need of a sound system, musical instruments, chairs, bibles, etc. Please remember them in your prayers that God will provide what they need.

The Year This Year - 2007

Praise God! - that’s the word we can best describe for the year 2007. The first and second quarter of this year brought about a lot of challenges in our family. We were so discouraged by a lot of things, people and events. If we tell them to you one by one you won’t believe we survived. But HALLELUJAH, God is faithful and walked with us through those tough times. The third quarter brought joy to our hearts when our second son J-j who graduated from nursing school last March, passed the nursing licensure examination. How gracious God is!

We are also thankful, that in our own little way we have blessed a lot of pastors and churches all over the country through our sports ministry and chaplain service ministry. God has been so faithful in providing the people and the finances needed to do the work. All of this was possible because of your prayers and your partnership with us.

As we enter the year 2008, we once again look forward to a continued partnership with you. God knows how truly grateful we are for all your support. May God in His goodness, return the blessings to you pressed down, shaken together and running over!

Wishing you a Blessed Christmas & a Healthy New Year!

Brian's Ministry Team to Negros

Brian brought his ministry team partners TJ Caparros & Company from Living Word Christian Ministries, Cebu City for a short missions trip to Negros Occidental last November 30 to December 03, 2007.

Their objective was to minister to the different youth groups of the local churches that they were going to visit. It was a wonderful experience seeing how the Lord tremendously use them in so many ways.

Brian also had the chance to meet his old friends during his younger days when we were still assigned in Negros.

Brian plans to have another short term missions trip this coming January, 2008 in Northenr Mindanao together with the Australian Sports Ambassadors Basketball Team.

Negros Missions Trip

Once again our missions trip last November 27 to December 03, 2007 was a great success. I personal brought the Faith Academy Manila Concert Choir headed by musical director Dan Eyestone for a series of concerts in Negros Island.

We had nine (9) concerts in four (4) differrent cities namely Bacolod City, Talisay City, Himamaylan City and La Carlota City. We sang and ministered to thousands of people in the area.

The local pastors and churches who helped us set up the concerts really did a good job in promoting the concerts. In fact, they were also excited to do the follow up to the people who gave their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Indeed, Jesus Christ is the Everlasting Light which was also the title of our concert.

I personally heard lots of good feedback from the local people that we worked with. They were really blessed with the songs that were sang by the choir and the friendship that was extended to them.

To God be the Glory!

Missions trip to Negros Occidental...

This coming November 27 to December 07, I will be bringing the Faith Academy High School Choir to Negros Occidental for a series of concerts in Bacolod City, Talisay City, La Carlota City and Himamaylan City.

Working with me on this trip is fellow missionary Dan Eyestone and currently the musical director.

The theme of this concert is "Everlasting Light To This Darkened World". We hope to share the love of Jesus thru music especially this time of the season. We will be having our concerts in schools, barangays and public plazas.

We really need your prayers especially for God to give us good weather during our evening concerts at the public plaza. We have been planning this for almost three (3) months now and we are looking forward to what God is going to do.

I also would like to thank our local pastors and church leaders who have been helping us in making this mission possible.

To God be the glory!

Church Of God Thanksgiving Service

LAST 18 NOVEMBER 2007 our family was invited to be the Thanksgiving Speaker on the 27th Church Of God Family Worship Center Celebration.

It was a wonderful time of praise & worship, testimonies, songs of praise, etc. I was led to share a message regarding the "Thanksgiving Wonders". It was also a time for us to renew friendship with our old friend like Ptr. Nestor & Bing Gagelonia, Ptr. Sammy Dadulo & family and Bro. Celso Landas.

Three (3) years ago, this church also invited us to be their thanksgiving speaker and now I have seen God continued to bless this church. I know God's hand is upon them, not only that they have reach a level of maturity in serving Christ but this church has been raising young disciples for the Lord Jesus Christ. To God be the Glory!

Our family rendered a special number during the service. We went home praising God for the time of fellowship with our brethren and seeing the church being on fire of serving the Lord.

We look forward in the future for the time of fellowship together.

Timothy Joseph "TJ" Caparros

The ACES Basketball Team, a ministry of Living Word Christian Ministries of Pastor Mel Caparros based in Cebu City was invited to minister at Grace Baptist Church, a fundamental baptist church of ABWAY.

We visit this church at least once a month to minister to the congregation. One of the reasons why we support this church because Pastor Sam Pascual who is the Senior Pastor is also into sports ministry. His church has been part of ICBL for the last nine (9) years.

Timothy Joseph or TJ as he fondly called was assigned to share the message. TJ was just recently commissioned to be a minister last October 21 in their church in Cebu City.

When TJ was sharing the message, I could really feel the Holy Spirit ministering to all of us. I was just blessed by the testimony of this young man who gave his life to the Lord at a very young age. Pastor Sam even mentioned before the end of the service that he would like to invite TJ again in their church.

I believe TJ and even the whole ACES team has been a blessing to the churches here in Davao and even to the young players.

We pray that our partnership in the sports ministry would continue to give glory & honor to our God.
We are so proud of you TJ!

Cebu City Sports Ministry Seminar...

I travelled to Cebu City last October 4-6, 2007 upon the invitation of Coach Lawrence "Tata" Merced and Coach Alfonso "Al" Solis in relation to our sports ministry seminar.

We had fifteen (15) churches represented in the meeting. Most of them are yet to start a sports ministry in their local churches. Joining me in this seminar was Pastor Francisco "Kiko" Sanchez from Manila. Pastor Kiko has a long experience in starting a sports ministry and organizing church leagues.

The pastors and church leaders got to understand the importance of sports ministry in relationship to their church planting program. We taught them about How to start a Sports Ministry, The Biblical Approach to Sports Ministry and How to start a Church League. During the open forum, we were able to answer some of their questions with regards to sports ministry.

The pastors requested for another seminar in the future. We felt that there is a need for us to have a follow up seminar in the future.

A visit from our Mommy Ivy...

LAST September 28-30, 2007 our Mommy Ivy visited us from Bacolod City. The last time she visited us was ten (10) years ago. Grace and I together with our boys Brian, JJ & Stephen spent quality time during her short stay with us.

She still remembers that during her first visit Davao only had one (1) mall which was Victoria Plaza, now it has five (5) malls. Mommy Ivy loves to go to the malls, she doesn't like to go to the beach. So we showed her all the malls in Davao. It was fun!

One of the highlights of her visit was the 23rd birthday of Brian Christopher. She treated us to a wonderful dinner of which we chose the place. The following day we celebrated Brian's birthday together with his friends at the house.

Mom's visit really meant to us because we miss her so much. Again we look forward to her next visit or shall we say we will visit her next summer.

To Mommy Ivy, Your the best!

SPORTS MINISTRY SEMINAR

LAST August 31, 2007 We had a sports ministry seminar for the ten (10) churches who are interested of setting up a sports ministry in their local church.

It was a one day orientation and briefing and the subjects covered were The importance of Sports Ministry, How to start a sports ministry, Choosing the right sport and How to present the Powerball.

The pastors and the chaplains had a great time. Now it is clear to them that God can also use any discipline in sport for His glory and honor.

We also taught them how to start a church league in their church and how to participate in a church league competition such as ICBL.

We hope to continue having sports ministry seminars in the different places all the over country.

JOHN PAUL C. VISITACION, RN

I was still in Zamboanga City last August 26, Sunday when I received a phone call around dinner time from my wife Grace. When I answered the phone, Grace blurted out "Lab, ihanda ang lechon" (Lab, prepare the Lechon). Initially, I did not understand what she was saying, but when she said that the result of the June 2007 Nursing Board Licensure Exam came out already and our son JJ was one of the 32,000 out of the 64,000 who took the exam that passed, I could not hold my emotions but shouted in a loud voice "Yes, Praise the Lord".

After my short talk with my wife and congratulated JJ over the phone, I started sending text messages to our family and friends thanking them for their prayers and support.

That night I could hardly sleep in my room at the hotel. I just continue to thank the Lord for his grace and favor given to us especially JJ. I know it was a very hard journey for JJ seeing how he studied hard and remained focus. What I saw in him was his determination to really do good and the prayers he did.

To JJ. we are so proud of you and we love you very much...

BASILAN: LAND OF WAR & PEACE

“I AM GOING TO BASILAN!” for almost two months now this tiny island in Western Mindanao area has been in the center of the news. This is where the Abu Sayyap Group (ASG), local terrorists group affiliated with the Al Quida Movement is based. More troops from the Philippine Army together with a small contingent of the US forces in the island has been running after the ASG. My scheduled trip to trip to Basilan was planned months before the war started.

Considered as one of the less populated provinces with a multi-ethnic population of around 300,000, Basilan is teeming with natural resources, business and employment opportunities. The island province, in fact, is one case of a company province with most of its population deriving income as employed agricultural workers.

The boat (fast craft) left around 6:45 AM from Zamboanga City to Isabela, Basilan which will take us around one (1) hour depending on the sea current. So many journalists and military men were also on board. As a missionary for many years now, I still hate boat rides. But this time the sea was calm and we really had a nice trip. While traveling to Basilan, I had the chance to chat with foreign journalists from BBC. One familiar face was BBC newscaster Veronica Pedrosa, who use to be with ABS-CBN then moved to CNN and now with BBC. I said hello to her and she was quick enough to give me a smile. I told her that I have seen her on BBC news. Right away, I asked her if she was scared going to Basilan. She was quick to reply, “It is part of my job”. That was the start of our short conversation but before I knew it we were almost docking at Isabela pier. Finally, I said to her “Take care & God bless”.

Watching over the island as we dock, I clearly remember that this was the place where Kumander Robot, the leader of the notorious Abu Sayyap Group (ASG) grew up. Kumander Robot was responsible for the kidnapped of New Tribes Mission missionaries Martin & Gracia Burnhams many years ago and later killed by the Philippine navy seals together with the US navy seals during an encounter at sea.

Because our meeting did not start yet, I went to have a short walk around the streets of Isabela. I still remember the horrible stories mentioned to me by some local folks regarding local businessmen being kidnapped by the ASG for money. By the way, it's becoming a business in this tiny island where they will kidnapped wealthy businessmen for money.

I went back to our meeting place just in time for our service to start. I was so blessed to see my old friends in the island. Pastora Virgie, our contact shared to us the conditions of the churches up in the mountains affected by the ongoing war between the military and the ASG. I just don't have the space and time to share with you but most of them are horrible.

We left the island right after our meeting, again it was time for me to say my goodbyes to my friends in Basilan. I promised to continue to pray for them. Hope to see them again in the future if not definitely in Heaven.

Update from the Mission Field!

Just a missions update regarding our missions trip here in General Santos City and Saranggani Province. Currently, we are at the highlands of Saranggani Province ministering to the B'Laan Tribe. Mostly tribal pastors, church members and their families are coming to our meetings.

I have been visiting this tribe for the last twenty (20) years and I am always excited to see what God is doing in the lives of this people. Since most of them are becoming christians and churches are being planted in the area, the muslim community have started to reduce in the area which also resulted to the less trouble and persecution amongst our B'Laan brothers. Praise the Lord!

Our missions trip will be visiting other tribal community in the area until August 20, 2007. Please continue to be in prayer for us. When we come back we will be travelling to Zamboanga City and Basilan. I will be keeping you posted on our travel and meetings.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

God bless!

BUD STANLEY SCHAEFFER

During my trip with the Ventures for Victory/Sports Ambassadors last July 13-26, 2007 at Quezon Province, I had the chance to worked with the living legend Bud Stanley Schaeffer. Bud was a member of the first Ventures for Victory/Sports Ambassadors team that went to the Philippines last 1952 under Coach Don Odle of Taylor University. He was the only non-Taylor University player that joined the team.

Since then, Bud has been coming with the Ventures team to the Philippines almost every year to play our Olympic teams and commercial teams in Manila. One of the players he could not forget was Caloy "The Big Difference" Loyzaga of the Philippines. Bud said that every time Caloy would play his team would always win.

It was really a great experience for me working with Bud. His passion for the game and love for the filipino people encouraged me a lot. I was always excited to hear from Bud the many stories he shared to me during our trip. Bud now is 80 years old and I am not sure if I will have the chance to work with him again. But those thirteen days was very precious to me and I was thankful to the Lord for the time I spent with Bud.

To Bud, thank you so much for coming and most of all loving the filipino people. I would always treasure the time we spent together during the trip.

I salute you Bud & Alice Schaeffer...

God bless you!

Quezon Province Tour

July 13-27, 2007 together with the Ventures for Victory/Sports Ambassadors Basketball Team we headed towards Quezon Province. Our first stop was Real, Quezon which we played ten (10) games in five (5) days. Our second and final stop was Atimonan, Quezon which included Gumaca, Plaridel and Alabat island. We played fourteen (14) games in seven (7) days. We played a total of twenty-four (24) games in thirteen (13) days. We distributed close to nine (9) thousand gospel tracts and seven (7) thousand Book Of Hope.

We worked with around twenty (20) pastors and churches in the area. A lot of these churches that we worked with are planting churches in the different communities and towns. We are so blessed with the response given by the local people. We look forward for more churches to be planted in Quezon Province.

Please continue to pray for the success of the follow-up being done right now by the pastors and church workers in the area.

Last July 01-09, 2007, we had another sports trip in the Visayas. Together with my two (2) boys Brian & JJ and the Buhay Sports Basketball Team, we had a trip to Northern Cebu Province. We played eighteen (18) games. We distributed almost seven (7) thousand gospel tracts and gave away six (6) thousand Book Of Hopes.

There was really a great response from the Pastors and churches in the area. Brian and JJ had the chance to share their personal testimonies in some of the games and even distributed gospel tracts and Book Of Hope.

After the trip, together with the boys, we had the chance to visit my mother for two (2) days in Bacolod City. It was a great trip for the three of us because we had the chance to visit my family and Grace's family also.

Highlights of the Quezon Province Tour...

Quezon Province Tour...

Last June 17-22, 2007, the Buhay Sports Basketball Team composed of 12 American players mostly from Kansas, Missouri, USA and myself went to the province of Quezon. We played some ministry games in the towns of Real, Infanta and General Nakar.

We played ten (10) games and ministered to schools and gave away gospel tracts and Book Of Hope to around 10,000 people. The local people responded very well to the gospel, some of them wants to be part of a bible study group and they are also interested to be visited by a pastor of church leader.

A lot of the pastors and local churches were really encouraged by the visit of the Buhay Sports Basketball Team, a ministry of First Love International.

We went home very excited and blessed of what God is going to do in the province of Quezon.

It was another memorable trip for me.

Please continue to pray for the pastors and churches who will be doing the follow up during this time.
